Reading at Hatch Warren Juniors
Our Reading Curriculum
We follow the National Curriculum for reading at Hatch Warren Junior School. The above progression document shows how learning builds through the year groups so that the National Curriculum objectives are met.
In the classroom, reading is taught daily in the form of "guided reading" sessions, where the children are taught specific reading skills and are given the opportunity to apply them to their independent work. Time is given during these sessions for children to develop their fluency of reading (reading aloud with expression and at a good speed) and their stamina (building their ability to read for longer periods of time).
Children read regularly within the daily English lesson as well as receiving opportunities to read in all curriculum areas.
We value the culture of reading and listening to stories and aim to read to the children daily across the school. We also encourage children to read a variety of books while in school and the Hatch Warren 100 is a list of 100 books that we suggest children might enjoy reading by the time they leave the school - details are found below.
Each class also has a weekly library slot, which enables all children to regularly visit the school library to borrow books. Children are directed towards choosing a colour-banded book which matches their reading ability and are then also able to choose another free choice 'sharing' book. This might be a book that they can read themselves or share with an adult at home.
Phonics
At Hatch Warren Junior School, we aim for all our children to become fluent, confident readers who are passionate about reading. Children who read regularly, and are read to regularly, have the opportunity to open the doors to so many different worlds. More importantly, reading will give children the tools to become independent life-long learners.
We recognise that some children require a little more support to develop their reading skills. We therefore use the Read Write Inc phonics scheme to help children develop into fluent and confident readers. Further information about the phonics scheme can be found in the above document.
There are some video links below from Read Write Inc to give parents further information about phonics and reading with your child.
The Hatch Warren 100 Book List - currently being updated
The Hatch Warren 100 is a set of 100 books that we have challenged all children from across the school to read before they leave us in year 6. Read them to yourself, read them at home with a parent or listen to them on an audio book - just get involved and enjoy this amazing selection of books.
